English course ( quantifiers, possessive pronouns n adjectives)

 

1...WHAT WHO WHEN WHERE N WHY

In this course  We will study the question words: Who, what, where and when. These words are used in the beginning of sentences to express an interrogative situation.

What:

What is used to ask about a thing or an action. Examples:

-What is this?
-What are you doing?
-What time is it?
-What the weather looks like?

Who:

Who is used to ask about a person. Examples:

-Who is this man?
-Who wants to go to school?

Where:

Where is used to ask about a place. Examples:

-Where are you going?
-Where is my book?

When:

When is used to ask about the time. Examples:

-When will you visit London?
-When that happened?

Why:

Why is used to ask about the reason of something. Examples:

-Why are you going to school?
-Why do you cry?

2...PHRASAL VERBS

We'll talk about special verbs in english language. They are called Phrasal verbs.

A phrasal verb is a verb + a preposition. The addition of the preposition changes the meaning of the first verb.

Examples:

• Break in: Enter with force.
• Break down: Stop.
• Break up: End a relationship.
• Break out: To run away, to escape.

 

The placement of the preposition is not always after the verb, sometimes they are separated by the object.

Example: Look a word up in the dictionary.

3....POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS

In this course, we will talk about special pronouns used in the english language to express the possession (ownership) of something. We are talking about possessive pronouns.

The main possessive pronouns are:

Possessive adjective	Possessive pronouns
My Your His Her Its Our Their	Mine Yours His Hers Its Ours Theirs

Examples:

• I am looking for our books, I found mine, but I couldn�t find yours.
• Can you give the key to the children. No they have theirs.

4....POSSISSIVE ADJECTIVES

In this course, we will talk about special adjectives used in the english language to express the possession (ownership) of something. We are talking about possessive adjectives.

The main possessive adjectives are:

Possessive adjective	Example
My Your His Her Its Our Their	My friend is a good friend. is that your book? My teacher is coming with his wife. That woman is coming with her husband. My dog broke its leg. Our country is beautiful. The children ate their breakfast before going to school.

5.... THE quantifiers SOME N ANY

Welcome to this new course, it will be about the quantifiers: some and any

These expressions are used to express the quantity of something when we are not interested in knowing the exact amount. They are used with both countable and uncountable nouns.

Some is usually used in positive statements:

• I have some great ideas for the party tonight.
• There are some birds on the tree.

As for Any, it's used in negative statements:

• I don't need any help
• I don't understand any word of this text.

In questions, we use Some when we are offering something and encouraging to something:

• Would you like some tea?
• Do you want to take some books with you?

Any is also used in questions when we are not sure about the answer:

• Do you have any brothers?
• Does he have any friends?

6.... Quantifiers A FEW,FEW, LITTLE N A LITTLE

• Welcome to this new course, it will be about the quantifiers: A few, few, a little and little.

  These expressions are used to express the quantity of something. the difference between them is in the way we are expressing the quantity, it may be positive or negative.

  • A few

  A few is used when we talk about countable nouns. It describes the quantity in a positive way. Examples:

  - We have in our library a few books.
  - I have a few friends.

  • A little

  A little has the same meaning as A few, but it is used in the case of uncountable nouns.

  - I have a little money, I can handle this situation.

  • Few

  Few is used to describe the quantity in a negative way:

  - Our school is poor, we have few books in it's library
  - Few friends visited me when I was sick.

  • Little

  Little is used for uncountable nouns to express a negative idea about quantity:

  - Last year, I was in trouble. I had little money.

  These expressions are used to express the quantity of something. the difference between them is in the way we are expressing the quantity, it may be positive or negative.
